William asks…

Term for ad-splashed backdrops in red carpet photography?

Celebrities are photographed at events, standing on the red carpet, with a white advertising board behind them plastered with a repeated pattern of company names and logos: the names of film companies, or magazines, or cosmetics firms, or what have you.

What industry or technical term do the advertising or photography professionals use to denote those advertising backdrops for red carpet event photography?

administrator answers:

It’s an ad board.

Carol asks…

Charge for birthday party photography?

Hi, I am just starting my professional photography business. How much should I charge for event photography like birthday party? and what is the price range between with/without album?

administrator answers:

You really need to do your local marketing research to discover what your competitors are charging in your area.

For your costing you need to work out your time and materials and then add on your profit.

Richard asks…

How do I get into professional [freelance] sports photography?

I am looking to do some professional sports photography here in Cork, Ireland. I have a Canon 40d which is adequate for the job.. 6.5 fps @10mp. I will look to rent a lens [canon 300mm or 400mm IS f2.8] and seek access to events such as Munster rugby matches, Cork hurling matches etc.

I assume that I must first apply for some sort of freelancers assosiation membership and then apply for a press pass for the match in question. How do I go about this?

Also, how much would I pay to rent the lenses [as mentioned above]?

Any proffesional advice will be appriciated.

administrator answers:

Start smaller – at small club matches and the like. Then try and sell the shots to local papers and the clubs themselves.
Once you have some experience behind you then you may have a chance at the bigger ones.
Most of the main clubs will only give passes to “proper” press photographers shooting for the established papers and sports mags.
You can try writing to the respective clubs to get passes but it is unlikely unless you are already and established freelancer.
